Description of the audiobook Chronicles of Canada Volume 13 - The United Empire Loyalists: A Chronicle of the Great Migration:
Volume 13 in the Canadian Chronicle series. This book reveals the oft-misunderstood Americans who chose to remain loyal to the British Crown during and after the American Revolutionary War. While the vast majority of American writings detailing the Revolution portray the Royalists (sometimes called Tories) in the most negative light, this volume explains their choice to flee to Canada (and other countries) rather than the United States in order to remain ground reasons. While there are no exact figures for the number of Royalists who fled to Canada between 1783 and 1784, John Adams and others estimate the population to be closer to a third, or about 1 million, during this period.
These are not fleeing out of fear, but the general belief that the benefits of the British Crown's support must outweigh the support they will receive from unproven social, financial and political structures that have not yet formed. Some are opportunists looking for free land. But they were brave men who decided to leave the comforts of their homes and help settle the unknown territories we now know as Quebec, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia. A group of people walking with their heads held high on a large uncultivated land.
